Urban lighting is usually considered a technical factor, separated from the social and cultural environment it serves. It is designed without taking into account the needs and habits of local citizens. How could citizens creatively contribute to the change of their cities’ lightscape?
Light art and design group Beforelight presents the European “Urban Lightscapes Symposium” where acclaimed designers, artists and theorists from Greece and abroad will share knowledge and experiences on light art and urban lighting.
The symposium will be a starting point for the study of public lighting as a powerful tool for citizens’ engagement and public space change. New technologies and innovative ideas in urban lighting will be presented and a European, interdisciplinary network of light professionals and artists will emerge.
Acclaimed Greek designers like Kostas Kapos and Eleftheria Deco will meet important European light artists like Valentin Ruhry, Tamar Frank and the light activist group Social Light Movement. People who will attend will have a unique opportunity to listen to Rogier van der Heide, Chief Design Officer of Philips Lighting and Artistic Director of the Amsterdam Light Festival.
The symposium will close with the screening of “The City Dark”, an award winning documentary about the consequences of urban lighting in the health, work and everyday life of city residents.
